About.com Guide to College Football

Tim Hyland is About.com's Guide to college football.

Tim grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, the heart of Big Ten country, and attended Penn State University, where, during his freshman year, he saw the 1994 Nittany Lions complete one of the greatest seasons in college football history -- only to be denied the national championship.

Though somewhat embittered by the experience, he's been hooked on college football ever since. He lives in Flourtown, Pennsylvania.

Experience:

Tim has worked professionally as a writer, reporter and editor for 10 years, including stints at three different newspapers in Pennsylvania and Maryland. His writing earned awards from both the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association and the Chesapeake Associated Press.

Tim is also founder of The College Football Athenaeum, a college football newsletter and website that has been publishing each college football season since 1999, and his writing has appeared in such publications as Fast Company magazine, Philadelphia City Paper, the Philadelphia Business Journal, the Washington Times, the Penn Stater magazine and several others.

Education:

Tim has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Penn State University and a master's degree in American studies from the University of Maryland.

From Tim Hyland:

Hello, everyone. My name is Tim Hyland, and I am About.com's Guide to college football.

I have loved college football since I was kid growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, watching the Ohio State Buckeyes each and every Saturday. But it wasn't until college, when I covered the 1997 Penn State Nittany Lions for the Penn State Daily Collegian, that I came to understand the passion and pageantry that make college football, in my opinion, America's greatest sport.

College football grips its fans and won't let go. Those of us who love this game truly live it -- and really believe the greatest 12 Saturdays of the year are in September, October, November and December.

Nine years ago, I launched The College Football Athenaeum, my own college football newsletter, and later transitioned it to the Web. On autumn Saturdays, if I'm not out covering a game, I can usually be found in my basement bar, watching the games, and enjoying every minute of it.
